Portrait Salon

Invite!

Here is our e-invite, featuring a portrait by Paul Statham and designed by Birch Studio Ltd. Feel free to lift this off here and blog it, email it, shout about it from the roof tops… let’s have a big party on the 30th.

This quote from Miranda Gavin, on the selection process and the her reaction to the submissions, will appear in the press release which will be out very shortly!

“Looking through the rejected entries has been an eye opener - it was a rare chance to see some of the images that are discarded, to ponder the question of portraiture in the 21st century, and to discover some top-notch portraits to boot. The National Portrait Gallery Photographic Portrait Prize 2011 is a prestigious international prize, however, there is a lack of feedback given to entrants and it was surprising to find that there is some confusion as to what constitutes a portrait – many images simply didn’t fit the criteria. Portrait Salon is a new venture and should be viewed as a positive addition to the photo competition arena as all entrants are being given another chance to get their work seen on screen and in print at no extra cost.”

What's in a Face?

Miranda Gavin mentions Portrait Salon on the Hotshoe Blog, accompanying an interesting article about portraiture photography more generally. She features some great pics of people with pipes by Alan Powdrill:

We are very excited that Miranda has agreed to be on our judging panel… we have yet to announce who else there will be, but watch this space!
